Types of Astrology

There are several popular types of astrology practiced across the globe, each with distinct systems and cultural roots. Here are some of the most well-known:

Western Astrology

Western astrology is based on the tropical zodiac and has its roots in ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Greek traditions. It divides the sky into twelve signs based on the Sun's position at a person's birth. It is widely practiced in Europe, the Americas, and modern popular culture, focusing on personality traits and life events.

Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

Originating from ancient India and linked closely with Hindu spiritual texts like the Vedas, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which aligns with the actual constellations. It emphasizes the Moon, lunar mansions (Nakshatras), and planetary periods (dashas) for predictions. This system is very detailed and spiritual in its approach.

Chinese Astrology

Chinese astrology is based on a twelve-year lunar cycle with each year associated with an animal sign and one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). It is heavily used in East Asia and focuses on personality, compatibility, and fate.

Mayan Astrology

The ancient Maya used a 260-day sacred calendar (Tzolk'in) with 20 day signs and 13 numbers. Mayan astrology explores cosmic energies and spiritual aspects of life, reflecting their advanced astronomical knowledge.

Jewish Astrology (Mazzalot)

Based on the Hebrew calendar, Jewish astrology links birth times and months with planetary rulers and zodiac signs with tribal or Kabbalistic significance. It remains culturally significant especially in Israel.

Islamic Astrology

Developed from astrology practices emerging from astronomy in Islamic and Persian cultures, this system includes geomancy and horary astrology. Though some Muslims reject astrology, it historically played a role in guiding decisions and predictions.

Other Systems

  • Horary Astrology focuses on answering specific questions based on the exact timing of the inquiry.
  • Medical Astrology links parts of the body and diseases to stars and planets, historically used in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Indigenous and African astrology traditions include animal totems, natural elements, and ancestral divination practices.

These diverse astrology types share the common theme of interpreting celestial bodies' positions and movements to provide insights into personality, fate, and life events, each shaped by their unique cultural and historical backgrounds.
